Sailing & Racing

Racing is encouraged in GSC as it focuses crews on improving skills and technique as there is always something more to learn regardless of where you are in the fleet.  However learners and those who want to potter about are welcome to do so when racing is in progress.

We sail/race every Saturday afternoon, weather permitting, from April to November, every Wednesday evening from May to August and every Sunday in the morning - (this is specifically for juniors but a lot of adult sailors join in). Juniors are also welcome to sail on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

There are three main fleets in the Club:

  • RS Fleet: RS400, RS200 and RS Feva Sundry Fleet
  • Wayfarer, GP14, Laser and OtherJunior Fleet
  • Pico, Laser, RS Feva, RS200

There are also other miscellaneous boats in these fleets and Gold and Silver divisions in the RS and Sundry fleets.

The Portsmouth Yard handicap (PY) system is currently used to determine a boat’s placing across any fleet and results are published on a weekly basis during the season. Please see the Safety on the Water Policy and Sailing Instructions for more detailed information.

For safety reasons members are discouraged to go afloat when there is no safety cover. In addition, as the harbour is a construction site, there are restrictions and protocols imposed upon the Club by the developers to protect workers and GSC members alike.

Training is available for any members in any fleet.

In 2010 the Club are trying out a ‘monthly’ series for Saturday and Sunday racing to encourage greater participation on the water. The sailing committee have also opted to use the low points scoring system in order that those on Safety and OOD duty are not unduly penalised should there be an unusually large turnout.
