The 2016 GCS Open Regatta proved to be a very windy regatta. The race committee, lead by Robert Galligan, ran the event faultlessly.
The forecast forced a delayed start and a reduced number of races form four to three with no discard.
The highly experienced GSC rescue teams, coupled with excellent facilities/equipment, kept the event running smoothly despite the challenging conditions.
In the RS200/400 class local’s Frank O’Rourke and Ben Purcel won the combined class showing great consistency over three races, where wind speeds topped 31 knts!
It was brilliant to see Simon Herriot and Tom Moran team up again, first RS400, showing us that nothing has been forgotten, hopefully we’ll see more from them this season. Local sailor Adam Leddy’s Feva was pushed hard by the visiting boat of Ralph Fledwick, the winning Feva only decided by best position in the final race.
Morgan Burgess with Alan Leddy won the Wayfarer class just ahead of John Turner’s visiting boat. Morgan’s consistency proved the winning combination despite John having two firsts. Just about every boat capsized and there were many tired and battered bodies, but all enjoyed a hot meal and drink at the prize giving (run by commodore David Nixon), the main topic of conversations being how many capsizes did you have,… See below for full results:
