Junior Sailing has always formed an integral part of our club ethos and development at Greystones Sailing Club. The club has produced many world-class sailing athletes who have gone on to represent both club and country in events at home and abroad. We are also a club who have generated some of the most respected sailing instructors in Ireland all of whom have come up through the club’s junior sailing programme. As our commodore always says “Junior sailing is the lifeblood of our club”. We have a very vibrant Junior sailing section with activities for sailors of all abilities.
Sunday sailing
Sunday sailing takes place every Sunday between June and August from 9:30 to 12:30 and is designed to encourage participation from all sections of Junior sailing. It is available to all Junior members free of charge. For those Junior members who have yet to purchase a boat, they can use one of the club boats for a small fee. Sailors are encouraged to take to the water at an early stage with the aim of progressing to compete in the Sunday series cup. There are several different fleets comprising Picos, Hartleys, Lasers, and RS Feva and 200 boats. Inexperienced sailors can use club Picos and Hartleys to gain confidence on the water and race against similar-level sailors before progressing to sailing their own Laser or RS.
Sailing is not a ‘drop-and-go’ activity for parents. We are completely dependent on a high level of parental participation, driving RIBs (safety boats), helping to crew them, helping the children to rig and launch their boats, kitchen duties, etc there is always something to do and to get involved in and we are very grateful to our volunteers.
Saturday Junior Championship
The Saturday Junior championship is run from May to September in conjunction with the club championship. It is primarily for competent Junior sailors with the use of their own boat. Prizes are given for 1st Feva, 1st fast PY, and 1st Asymmetric. Competitors are also entered in the club championship with many of our junior sailors winning both on several occasions.
Wednesday Series
Competent juniors are invited to participate with the adult sailors in the Wednesday series which has prizes across all fleets.
Junior Training Course (JTC)
The club runs an ISA-affiliated JTC which runs from June until mid-August with courses designed for sailors of all abilities from age 6 to 18. Course information can be found under our training page tab.
It’s not all about the sailing we also run Discos, BBQs, and other activities throughout the year for our Juniors and help and support many in their Gaisce and president awards programs.
